What does “RP-SMA” mean?
RP-SMA stands for Reverse Polarity SMA. It uses the same external thread as a standard SMA connector, but the gender of the center contact is reversed—typically used to comply with regulatory requirements and prevent accidental mating with standard SMA connectors.
How can I identify an RP-SMA connector?
An RP-SMA male has external threads (like a standard SMA male) but a female center socket. Conversely, an RP-SMA female has internal threads and a male center pin. This reversal is the key distinction.
Are RP-SMA and SMA connectors compatible?
No. Due to the reversed center contacts, RP-SMA and SMA connectors are not intermateable. Attempting to connect them can result in poor contact or damage. Always match RP-SMA to RP-SMA and SMA to SMA, or use a proper between-series adapter like this one.
Where are RP-SMA connectors commonly used?
RP-SMA is widely used in Wi-Fi routers, wireless antennas, IoT devices, and consumer RF equipment—especially where regulatory compliance requires non-standard mating to prevent antenna replacement.
Why use an RP-SMA to SMA adapter?
This adapter allows you to connect RP-SMA-equipped devices (e.g., Wi-Fi modules) to standard SMA-based test equipment or antennas, ensuring compatibility without compromising signal performance.
