INTRODUZIONE AI VCO

Per VCO ( Voltage Controlled Oscillator ) si intende un oscillatore libero la cui frequenza di uscita è variabile tramite una tensione di sintonia in corrente continua fornita esternamente al VCO , il diodo varicap contenuto all’interno del VCO è il componente preposto ad effettuare la variazione di frequenza. La variazione in frequenza è possibile poichè il diodo varicap agisce da condensatore variabile sul circuito LC che determina la frequenza di oscillazione del VCO stesso, possiamo quindi affermare che il VCO è nato con la comparsa dei diodi varicap (Yig e Gunn a parte .

Con diodi varicap moderni cosiddetti hyperabrupt è possibile ottenere VCO con estese larghezze di banda, infatti questi varicap hanno un’escursione di capacità molto grande Δc > 15 (Δc = rapporto di variazione tra capacità min. e max.), sono anche disponibili diodi ottimizzati per tensioni di sintonia basse da 1 a 4 V per le moderne applicazioni wireless.

Sovrapposta alla tensione di sintonia può essere applicata anche la modulazione audio FM (o video FM), altri VCO invece hanno il pin di modulazione separato semplicemente per una questione di comodità oppure per avere una sensibilità di sintonia (MHz / V) diversa dalla sensibilità di odulazione. L’effetto di modulazione in un VCO è perfettamente simile all’effetto di variazione della frequenza tramite la cc applicata al varicap , infatti , se la tensione cc di controllo fosse solamente un pochino sporca di residuo di rete , si avrà una modulazione residua di fondo . La banda passante della modulazione dipende principalmente dalla costante di tempo tra l’ingresso di modulazione ed il varicap.

Come regola empirica vale la considerazione che un VCO con estesa larghezza di banda è usato principalmente per strumentazione, mentre un VCO con ristretta larghezza di banda viene usato per modulazioni FM, i VCO con ristretta larghezza di banda hanno un miglior phase noise. I VCO con risuonatore ceramico DR hanno escursioni in frequenza ancora più limitate ma un ottimo phase noise e una stabilità intrinseca migliore dovuta al maggior Q del risuonatore DR rispetto ad un circuito LC classico. Il risuonatore DR si comporta esattamente come una cavità λ/4 oscillando in modo TEM, grazie a delle ceramiche con alto valore di εr da 20 a 90 è possibile ottenere delle vere cavità con dimensioni ultraminiatura (vedere risuonatori DR a sezione quadra).

La frequenza minima in un VCO si ottiene con tensione di sintonia zero ovvero massima capacità del varicap, mentre la frequenza più alta con tensione di sintonia alta ovvero minima capacità del varicap, come dato empirico ne consegue che la frequenza minima non può essere ulteriormente abbassata mentre è possibile un leggero overrange per la frequenza massima.

I VCO a sintonia lineare (risposta MHz / V costante su tutta la banda) sono più complicati da ottenere, servono principalmente per strumentazione e con bande generalmente molto estese , in una catena a PLL si usano con i comparatori di fase dove serve avere un guadagno costante d’anello del loop, i VCO a risposta lineare sono utilizzati anche dove è indispensabile avere la modulazione costante su tutta la banda di funzionamento.

I VCO costituiscono un circuito delicato e importante nella progettazione di sintetizzatori e apparati in genere per RF, il loro comportamento unito alle loro prestazioni (phase noise) spesso determinano le prestazioni dell’intero progetto e soltanto tramite complicate reti di sintesi è possibile ripulire il rumore stesso del VCO.

I VCO trovano applicazioni nei sintetizzatori per la generazione di frequenze agganciate a PLL, nel circuito di OL di ricevitori e analizzatori di spettro, ma anche nelle microspie, piccoli trasmettitori video, ecc...

Per utilizzare al meglio i VCO ed ottenere le migliori prestazioni, 2 sono le regole importantissime da rispettare: separare molto bene l’uscita RF del VCO dal "mondo esterno" tramite un opportuno stadio buffer con alto isolamento inverso (vedere parametri S12 o reverse isolation nei MMIC), filtrare con la massima cura l’alimentazione e la modulazione, meglio sarebbe poterlo alimentare tramite batteria con fili schermati e cortissimi, il filtraggio tramite opportuni filtri EMI è molto importante , ad esempio poniamo di avere un VCO con sensibilità di sintonia 10MHz / V, significa che basta un ripple sulla tensione di sintonia di solo 1 mV per avere una modulazione residua di ben 10 KHz.

La specifica più importante in un VCO è il basso phase noise (rumore di fase) esso dipende principalmente da 3 fattori:

  • Uso di transistor o Fet a basso flicker noise (1/f), questo è principalmente causa del phase noise vicino alla portante
  • Uso di transistor o Fet a basso rumore (alto rapporto S/N del segnale in uscita)
  • Q sotto carico del circuito risonante, come circuito risonante si intende il circuito LC o cavità o risuonatore DR ecc...

Inoltre per garantire un basso phase noise anche i condensatori che fungono da partitore e l’accoppiamento con l’elemento attivo ricoprono un ruolo molto importante, infatti non è sufficiente disporre di un risuonatore con alto Q a vuoto, il vero trucco consiste nel trovare il giusto accoppiamento col circuito.

Il phase noise è espresso in dBc / Hz ( dB carrier per Hz ) che significa quanto rumore è contenuto ad una certa distanza dalla portante considerando una larghezza di banda unitaria pari ad 1 Hz e rapportato al livello della portante.

E’ quindi da considerare come un numero relativo che in poche parole dice di quanti dB è attenuato il rumore di fase rispetto al livello della portante come se fosse misurato da un ricevitore avente 1 Hz di banda passante.

Per la costruzione di VCO sono disponibili molti componenti speciali fino alle microonde, per esempio:

  • diodi varicap di sintonia in case ceramico, in SMD, a basso costo o hyperabrupt, anche adatti per VCO diretti a microonde vedere MA46H037
  • induttanze alto Q, in SMD e ultraminiatura, con vasta gamma disponibile
  • condensatori chip alto Q vedere serie ATC100A in porcellana alta stabilità
  • risuonatori ceramici SAR, o a dielettrico DR sia coassiali che a pastiglia
  • vari transistor e GaAs-FET oscillatori, in modo particolare bipolari con basso flicker noise con Ft 45 GHz vedere BFP405 - 520 e BFT92, sia PNP che NPN
